Learn Jazz Guitar the Way Players Actually Play—Not the Way It's Currently Taught

The play-first approach that has entry level jazz guitarists improvising over standards—without the theory overload that stops most players cold.

(This is a student, not the teacher!)

Chris Shearer - Salem, Oregon

The 3 Types Of Stuck - Sound familiar?

WHERE TO START?

I have some years of experience playing other genres, but I'm new to jazz. I don't know where to start, and want to take the most direct path to playing as soon as possible without getting bogged down.

KNOW MODES, CAN'T PLAY

I've spent much time learning the modes, scales and theory they said to learn, but I still can't improvise or play anything that's pleasing to my ear. Where have I gone wrong and what should I do now?

JUST OVERWHELMED!

I bounce from from teacher to teacher seeking that silver bullet without making any real progress. I don't play any better than I did years ago. The amount of information online is too much to handle

The academic way isn't working

You’ve spent countless hours memorizing scales, modes, and theory. Yet when it’s time to improvise, your fingers hesitate and your solos fall flat.

You’re drowning in information from YouTube videos and well-meaning , but  clearly unqualified teachers, and you still can’t play anything that sounds like more than random notes that “fit” over chords.

The more theory you learn, the more confused you become.

You know what jazz should sound like. You just can’t make it happen. But why?

The Hidden Toll of Misguided Learning

Think about what all this confusion is really costing you.

Every hour spent on theory that doesn’t advance your playing is an hour you’re not actually making music. Every course that leaves you more confused than before is money down the drain.

But here’s what’s really frustrating – the jazz education industry keeps pushing the same broken formula over and over:

Spend 4 years in school. Memorize endless modes and scales. Study complex theory. Then congratulations – you’re a jazz guitarist!

Much like our friend in the cartoon below:

Back in the day when there wasn’t an internet to hide behind, if you wanted to sit in at a jam session, then you had better been able to play – or risk getting a cymbal thrown at you (true story!)

sO... what is improvising?

Learning To Speak The Language

Consider this analogy:

Think about how a child learns to talk.

First comes “mama” and “dada.” Then more words. Soon they’re speaking in sentences, and before you know it, they’re chattering nonstop.

Does the child know what a noun or verb is? Of course not. But that doesn’t stop them from communicating perfectly.

Jazz works the same way. It has a vocabulary – musical phrases, licks, and ideas that real jazz players use.

Here’s the key:
When you improvise over a chord progression, you’re not inventing everything from scratch. You’re connecting jazz vocabulary you’ve learned to play, just like putting words together to form sentences.

Now you should be thinking to yourself: “How do I build my jazz vocabulary?”

The real reason you can’t carry a solo and impress an audience?
It’s not you, it’s them. . .

Who Should You Avoid? Consider This Scenario:

You need to have surgery so you begin a search to find the best surgeon you can afford. After all, surgery is a matter of life and death. Let’s say you can place an ad seeking a surgeon. Here’s a hypothetical comparison between two candidates for your upcoming surgery:

Candidate A

Candidate B

What does surgery have to do with learning to improvise?!

Aspiring students are duped every day. They throw away their money, and worse, their time, by believing *self-proclaimed* guitarists who promise the world, and deliver nothing but a mountain of theory and modes as the pathway to learn.

One last analogy to drive this important point:

If you wanted to become a public speaker, would you learn from someone:

  • who’s terrified of speaking in front of a crowd?
  • with no history of public speaking?
  • with a first grade level vocabulary?

No, of course not.

You would seek someone with extensive public speaking experience, who has given numerous speeches and is eloquent with their words.

CONTI MAKES LEARNING EASIER

TRANSCRIPTIONS

Most video lessons come without a transcription, or one that requires a decoder to decipher. Conti differs as he takes the time to simplify his lines for the entry level player with easy to read notation. Can't read music? Tablature is also provided for your learning convenience.

POSITION MARKERS

You can play the same note in several places on the guitar. Conti eliminates all guesswork by providing position markers so your fingers are always where they need to be. Now you can execute hip sounding lines with precision and no wasted movement.

MP3 & MIDI TRACKS

The best way to improve your playing? Play with musicians who are better than you. Ticket To Improv includes the backing tracks Robert plays with - in both standard MIDI and MP3 audio file formats. Hear yourself playing with real musicians & boost your confidence

Robert Conti learned by picking up and dropping the needle on the record player endlessly to get lines under his fingers. But you now have the benefit of a seasoned pro showing you exactly what he plays. Ticket To Improv comprises over 16 hours of laser focused, No Modes No Scales®, old school jazz guitar learning. The difference is there’s no theory to sidetrack or bog you down from achieving your playing goals.

Who Are Joe B and Frank S? Can they Even play?

Visit most websites and you’ll find generic testimonials with made up names that you cannot verify. Written testimonials are great to have, and Robert’s learning resources have received thousands over the years.

But in a world full of marketing hype, how can you reliably determine a teacher’s ability to transform the way you play?

RESULTS ON VIDEO!

Go on any internet forum or discussion group and ask for a product suggestion. You’ll receive numerous suggestions (most of which will be way over your head). You’ll also notice one thing that is almost always missing – You hardly ever see someone say:

“Here’s a video of what I learned to play from my teacher”

Why? The product is only as good as the teacher who delivers the material.

In the real world, there’s only a handful (yes, a handful) of jazz guitarists (online) qualified to teach. We’ll even tell you who they are, as an accomplished player can teach you more than an internet marketer posing as a jazz guitarist.

Only a skilled, seasoned player is capable of delivering results for his students.

When was the last time a guitar lesson worked so well, you grabbed your camera to show everyone?

Common Questions From Students

The all-knowing “they.” Where have they gotten you?

The answer is absolutely not. As an entry level student, you must start somewhere. In today’s fast food world, everyone wants everything immediately. But the truth is, you’ve got to have some skin in the game and to the work. What sets Robert apart is that the work you do actually translates to tangible results in your playing.

Back in the golden era of jazz guitar, there were no distractions. No internet, no Facebook, no smart phones. You had your guitar and some buddies. No distractions meant that you practiced playing, not discussing on a forum. With Ticket to Improv, you’re playing jazz. And when you’re playing jazz, you’re becoming a better jazz player, not a jazz talker.

View the video below as Robert describes the necessary level of skill required to get started.

If you haven’t attained the level of skill presented in the video, don’t worry as Robert has you covered. A valuable bonus (which you’ll learn about in the section below) is included which addresses this very issue.

Absolutely, as Robert also provides the student with tabs for each project. And don’t forget, you have a world class pro player walking you through the solo measure by measure, note by note.

Yes, because (a) Conti uses very popular jam session standards and (b) he uses a fairly limited musical vocabulary that you learn to use in various contexts.

Your fingers will say “Hey we’ve played this before” but your mind will be saying “But this is a different chord progression…” and you will start to see how licks and lines can be moved around.

For a strong intermediate player or advanced player, these solos are not challenging. But for those trying to learn to improvise using tunes, to actually end up with something they can play with friends or at pick-up jam sessions, the material is quite helpful.

Slow down! First you must learn how to play the lines, period. All too often, student players want to jump ahead well before they’re ready. Get the material under your fingers, then start to experiment with the feeling.

Although there are four volumes in the series, they do not increase in difficulty from volumes one to four. The idea/goal is to get a truckload of jazz vocabulary under your fingers as quickly as possible.

Ticket To Improv is not some flavor of the week Youtube video from your favorite phony. The Conti slogan, since he began teaching in 1966, is No Modes No Scales® Robert doesn’t talk about them and doesn’t use them in his playing, ever. If you want more modes and scales, shake the internet tree and hundreds or thousands of amateur hacks with fall out.

That’s great! We’ll send you a backing track, and look forward to hearing you play over the changes. Can’t do it? That’s why you’re here and not wasting more time on Youtube generating ad income for internet marketers masquerading as jazz guitar instructors.

If you’re at the right place (see question 2) with your technique, with practice, you’ll begin seeing results within just a couple weeks. These are short term results, not years of monotony with nothing to show for afterwards.

mAJOR INCLUDED BONUS:
THE PRECISION TECHNIQUE

On a saxophone, there is only one way to play a given note. But the guitar is unique as you can play the same note in several places on the fretboard. This fact results in frustration for the novice player, especially when they’re given the poor advice to “just transcribe.”

You’ve watched guitarists who play in one position, stop, and move to another position before playing again. Such poor technique leads to boring, choppy sounding solos that kill momentum and excitement. Every pro player employs some form of technique.

Follow the same time tested blueprint that Robert Conti used to develop his mind blowing left and right hand technique, enabling him to fly up and down the neck with ease. By using Conti’s fingering protocol and technique, you will learn exactly where to put your fingers – with no guesswork involved.

The proof? Again, it’s always in the playing:

Conti In 1969

Conti Present Day

bUT, WILL IT WORK FOR YOU?

No teacher can wave a magic wand over your head and turn you into a fire breathing bebop dragon. But if you’re willing to put in the effort, the concepts presented in The Precision Technique will allow you to execute lines with no wasted movement, and move up/down the neck with great ease.

As always, we let the results do the talking. See one of our students play a seemingly endless line, in sync, with Robert. Such a precision demonstration would be impossible without a protocol for navigating the neck at blinding speed.
